Bien qu'inconnue, l'origine de «The first Nowell» semble remonter au seizième siècle anglais .
L'orthographe «The first Noel» a pu faire croire à tort à l'origine française de ce chant, par opposition à «The first Nowell» d'origine anglo-saxonne. Mais après la conquęte de l'Angleterre par les Normands de nombreux mots français ont été anglicisés, tel «Noël» qui fut traduit en «Nowell».
Les premières versions imprimées de ce chant avaient d'ailleurs pour titre "The first Nowell".
"The first Noel" a été édité la première fois en 1833 dans le recueil de Noëls "Christmas Carols par William B. Sandys.
